Commisioner's Corner

We are constantly looking for grants made available by various organizations to help us fulfill our obligation to our community.   Over the past 5 years, we have been very fortunate to obtain almost $500,000.00 in grants.   With these grants we have purchased a new fire attack engine, new turnout gear, training aids, forestry firefighting equipment, a thermal imaging camera and other miscellaneous equipment.   Soon, a new ambulance will occupy our station, 80% paid for by a grant from the State Dept. of EMS.  This is money that we have not had to pull from the local tax revenues to provide our citizens with the best protection possible.  It is important to know, we not only give of our time to service our community, but we are taxpayers too.   It is also important to point out, if the volunteer system were to go away, the cost of fire and rescue in Isle of Wight would go up by millions of dollars a year.  In 2013, the TOTAL operating budget from the County for Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services was $1,215,583.00.   The total County Budget was $94,460,625.00.  That means that Volunteer Fire & Rescue agencies received 1.2% of the overall County operating budget.   We have long been good stewards of the Citizens tax dollars.   We will continue that tradition as long as we are able.   Contact a member today or fill out the online application if you would like to join our team!

Officer's Corner

Barbecue Safety

  • Before using a grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line. Make sure the venturi tubes - where the air and gas mix - are not blocked.
  • Do not overfill the propane tank.
  • Do not wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue.
  • Be careful when using lighter fluid. Do not add fluid to an already lit fire because the flame can flashback up into the container and explode.
  • Keep all matches and lighters away from children. Teach your children to report any loose matches or lighters to an adult immediately. Supervise children around outdoor grills.
  • Dispose of hot coals properly - douse them with plenty of water, and stir them to ensure that the fire is out. Never place them in plastic, paper or wooden containers.
  • Never grill/barbecue in enclosed areas - carbon monoxide could be produced.
  • Make sure everyone knows to Stop, Drop and Roll in case a piece of clothing does catch fire. Call 911 or your local emergency number if a burn warrants serious medical attention.
